Honour your gappie
A tribute to...
...friendship
From all the wonderful, unique, and heartwarming submissions, five “Gappies” have been selected to receive their very own city bench at GAPP.
Five friends, companions, family members, local heroes. People who make a difference for others or for Amsterdam. People who connect, inspire, help, laugh, listen, and make someone's life just a little more beautiful.
From now on, they each have their own spot on the 8th floor. A city bench as a tribute, a meeting place, and a lasting reminder of their story.
For Mokum. For each other. For the Gappies who shape the city.
The reveal
Jason
Jason was a beloved father and property developer who contributed to Amsterdam’s cityscape for many years. Sadly, he passed away recently. His daughter Femke wanted to honour him through GAPP, just as he had always been there for her throughout his life.
Fabian
Fabian is the proud father of Esmey and serves in the army. Although he is frequently deployed, he is always there for her. Their favourite moment together? Running marathons.
Henk
For forty years, Henk was a familiar face on Amsterdam’s trams. After retiring as a tram driver, he dedicated himself as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House Emma in Amsterdam. He has now been an indispensable force there for ten years, for both guests and colleagues.
Doortje
Doortje was nominated by her childhood friend Kiliana. Together, they enjoy festivals, good food, and going for drinks. When Kiliana was confronted with a serious illness, Doortje was always there for her, helping her through a difficult time.
Pjotr
Pjotr is a buddy for students living at Hotel Casa. With his enthusiasm and dedication, he is always ready to help others. He also organises activities and events that create connection and a warm, welcoming atmosphere within the student community.
An ode to the city benches of Amsterdam
Amsterdam’s city benches are iconic places of meeting and connection, where neighbors, travelers, friends, and passersby come together. They symbolize the everyday, unmistakable Mokum feeling. That is exactly why I placed city benches on my rooftop.
A tribute to Mokum and to human connection.
Celebrate friendship and Mokum on GAPP
My rooftop terrace is located on the 8th floor of Hotel Casa in Amsterdam East. CASA was founded in the 1950s based on a forward-thinking idea: to offer students an inspiring and affordable place to live, where learning, meeting, and friendships naturally come together. These ideals live on at GAPP.
Gabbe Scheltema, one of the founders of Hotel Casa, was the inspiration behind GAPP, my rooftop terrace. GAPP is a place where people come together, where new friendships are formed, and where Mokum is celebrated.
